It's hard to believe but we will soon be posting snow photos. Going from this green and the lovely hills full of color, to bare trees and wind swept winter. Found some lovely little mushrooms on a walk.

This is one of our silkie chickens, we feed them beet juice and some of their feathers turned purple.

I just have a little time to post that our B&B is fine, and all the animals on the farm are just fine, don't worry! We are so high on the hill, that we only lost a few trees and had some erosion damage. Please pray for our friends and neighbors in the town of Candor, and also the town of Owego, (among other places,) many are still without power, and some homes and businesses are a complete loss.

A cottage in the woods that sleeps up to 4,

with an upstairs double-bed and a downstairs futon.

An outdoor spa room with a tree-hanging shower, a tub and lights.

Yes, we have electricity, Yes, we have runnning water and a bathroom, with hot water and the cottage is heated.

Linens and towels are provided.

We love to host children, but they must be supervised, especially in the sleeping area. We do not provide any pack&play, etc, you will need your own.

We are unfortunatly not accessible for the handicapped.

Please, no pets, there are many animals on our farm.

Our breakfasts are as organic and local as possible, with many ingredients grown right here on our farm.

Your breakfast is delivered to your door!

Farm tours are available when making reservations.

Smoking is not allowed indoors.

A beautiful view, we are "in the middle of no-where," on a quiet site on the end of our farm. While we are central to several towns and cities, please expect rural driving to get to them. Since we are in the fingerlakes area and there are beautiful hills to go around, everywhere! (stunning in the fall!)

This is the booth for Dead end farm, our local Organic Milk and Beef. LOVE their vintage scale. They don't make them like this any more, still working!

Delicious! Once again we had the priveledge to smack our lips and use our antique extractor all together as a family.

However, this time all was not so sweet. The hot weather, the bearings going bad, and then the extractor vibrating almost off the table. (We have some sanding to do)

All in all, I think it was a learning experience still, and we held our tempers, and were completely rewarded by the taste of french vanilla ice cream with fresh honey spooned all over it.

Things are busy, busy here at the farm, and we have been baking and having tea to get thru the warm afternnoons.

Today the weather cooled off nicely and we spent some time in the garden, weeding and doing a bit of the yard work, I pruned this branch from the hydrengea. Some things on the breakfast menu for the B&B cottage include, scones, apple maple sausages, buckwheat pancakes, some special sauces (like strawberry-rhubarb, and pear butter), with local maple syrup, and also cornbread in a teenie little pan, served with Stonewall Kitchen marmalade and honey-whipped butter. I hope this makes you hungry!

Yummy mail, garlic and the pantry

We just had some yummy mail come, our regular shippment of Stonewall kitchen jams and sauces, I just love cooking with their ingredients! We always have some for sale in the cottage too.

Here is a close up of this years garlic, I am afraid it's a bit small, we are still waiting for our stretch of sunny days. The growth you see here happened over one night! That was after the one nice spring-like day that we had.

Garlic again-so pretty. I wish I could post the smell of the earth, and the garlic too!

This is a view of our pantry, I thought maybe guests would like to see some glimpses of the makings of breakfast! These herbs are either grown here, or are from a bulk order that I get, and are all organic. Rosemay, Basil, Chili, Raspberry, Chamomile, Spirulina...

We are very sorry to let everyone know that the cottage is undergoing some maintanence this month. We cannot accept any reservations for April. We will be up and running again by May, and the good news is, that the cottage will be fresh and have some wonderful new details. I am planning on posting photos of our progress, so keep watching here.

This is what it looked like outside, as the boys and I started the sap boiling to make maple syrup.

We have never done this before, so it took lots of stirring and figuring before we were getting it right!

We found out that we had to take the sides of the pan off the blocks for it to boil.

At 10PM, when the moon looked like this, we took off our first syrup, and this morning we had pancakes with sweet homemade maple syrup.

Welcome to Small Graces, it will soon be spring and all kinds of exciting wonderful things happen then on our farm. These are some of our favorite photos from last spring.

For now, we still have snow, and our winter chores, but we are also curled up to the seed catalogues in the evening, and getting our lambing supplies ready, and best of all, picking out new recipies to make for our guests. Can't wait to have you come for a visit.

I awoke the other morning to the sound of our horses soft breath as they were grazing in the field next to the window of our gypsy cart. My first thoughts were calm and collected and I felt so connected to the whole farm as I started my day. I can't wait until we have it painted and pulled up to the top of our hill... I am really tempted to say we would let guests rent it out too, and I am wondering how many people out there are dreaming of the travelling life??

It might look like a quiche, but it is a provencial tart, and this is the most perfect that I have ever seen it. Come on over for a taste! Other breakfasts on the menu include peach cobbler, and our ever popular French toast bake, made with Heidleburg bread, our own fresh eggs and cream and served with real Maple Syrup.

Hi Jennifer and Dean,David, Alexi and I stayed at Small Graces over Labor Day Weekend and had a wonderful time. We did not have the opportunity to sign your guest book (with 15 month old Alexi keeping us on our toes!), so we just wanted to send you a short email expressing how much we enjoyed our stay. We have stayed at other B&Bs in the area, though what made this experience unique was having an entire cottage to ourselves and a homecooked breakfast carried to our cottage each morning. And speaking of breakfast...they were absolutely delicious! We are vegetarian, and we were well fed each morning with meals prepared with homegrown ingredients that were so scrumptuous...our mouths still water when we think about breakfast at Small Graces. We loved the tour of the farm and seeing all of the animals. Your B&B is the ideal location, close to the Ithaca Farmer's Market, Ithaca College and Cornell University, as well as Lake Cayuga. We had such a wonderful trip and your B&B was one of the biggest factors.Happy Autumn!

This is one of your closest neighbors, whenever you come to visit. There are a few cows, too, but they stay to themselves pretty well. This little goose only hangs out in the early morning, then she takes a walk around the property. There is a little duck, named puddle, who hangs out most of the day in this part of the stream.

Here we are at the local 4h fair. This is Badger the Shetland ewe, about to go in the ring. Even thought she looks like a doll, and is really very miniature as far as sheep go, she WAS not being cute at the moment, and had just pushed me into the door you see behind me in the photo.
So, you see my sweet little girl giggling at her momma, and me thinking that we needed one less sheep on our farm!!! (Just kidding, Badger is already cozy back in her pasture.)

Shetland sheep are listed as a Conservation breed. We have 4 conservation, or rare sheep breeds on our farm. We raise two of those breeds, Jacob and Hog Island.

Poppies from the Ithaca Farmer's Market, at the Dewitt Park, on Tuesday. The Saturday market is at Steamboat Landing on Cayuga Lake inlet, and is much bigger. Tuesday we were treated to Thai for lunch with Carob cake from Macro Mommas for dessert. All the while--- live music, people chit-chat, children running, climbing trees. We went home with more potted herbs for the garden. I paid top dollar for the herbs, but they are also the best I have seen.

I do want to share the photo of this amazing woman, Joy. I cannot explain the feeling we all get, when we round the corner on our way home from somewhere, and all of her flowers come in sight. We watch for them blooming every spring and when they start we all tell each other, as if the people in the same car can't see it!! What a generous effort, and how worth it. It lifts everyone, and we all "own that same feeling", whether we have planted anything in our lives.

The eggs this morning are beautiful and fresh from the coop.

Our hens scatter around the property all day and then are tucked in at night, to stay safe from predators. Dean designed the coop to be easy to move, so they don't wear out any area with their scratching. Right now they are situated at the top of the sheep hill and I think their view is more pretty than the one from our house. We have 15 little lambs hopping around in the winter pen, just waiting for more warm weather to get the grass really growing. That is what is happening here on the farm, the cottage has many openings for reservations so give us all call, if you like your breakfast fresh.

The baby can hardly decide if she wants to hug the
lamb, or if he might lick her and she needs to get away!
It's only the first of many lambs for the season.
Dora is this little guys moma, and she ALWAYS is the
first to lamb. She does it without assistace and so
nonchalante, it is her true calling! Her son this year,
(he is a ram lamb) is called cookies and cream. I wanted
to name him "hearts bottom", he has a perfect heart on
on one of his, "cheeks".

Winter in the apple orchard

The apple orchard is next to our picnic area and garden, the garden is full of garlic right now, I can't wait to see it in July! Samuels compost is on top of it all, and it is so rich--I have never seen a squash plant as big as ours this summer. There was so much squash that we froze some for zucchinie breads and things, plus we had enough for fresh eating all summer.

This is what most of the hills around here look like right now. It has been a tricky year for hay. It seems like everyday has been a mix of beautiful sun with a shower or two. This hay is my sister and brother in laws. They sure have a pretty view. I think it's Pennsylvania actually, you can see a long way from the top of the hills around here!

Take a walk with me at Small Graces,
it's night, and the moon is shining. You can smell the roses by the gate,
it's so bright you don't need a flashlight, and everywhere you look there are fireflies. It's cool, for a July evening, and it just rained, the ground is a little misty and the tiny frogs are peeping softly in the woods. The creek is gently trickling and the breeze is a soft breath through the trees. A new lamb is baaing by the barn, you are home.

Appleblossom is a Hog Island Ewe. Listed as critical by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. She is now an official member of the farm, look for more posts about Appleblossom as we go into the fall and
spring. She is going to meet a hog Island ram, and hopefully by April we will have lamb photos!!

Potatoes from the garden

Here we have some small potatoes, fresh out of our garden. When you come for a visit, we promise your food is fresh and as seasonal and local as possible. Most of the summer that means right from our organic farm and garden. Quiche with fresh peas or green beans. Hash browns, or a scramble with heirloom tomatoes and chives or dill. I have to go now, I am getting hungry. Anyone think strawberry shortcake is okay to eat at 10:30am??

Small Graces B&B is located in a tiny wood in the green hills of the lower fingerlakes region. Tioga County, NY.

We are central to Ithaca, Binghamton, and Elmira/Corning. Syracuse is about 1&1/2 hours, and NYC is 3&1/2 to 4 hours.

We are near hiking and fishing areas, with Cayuga Lake only 30 minutes away, and the state forest literally within view of the cottage. Trail map available in the cottage.

20 minutes from the historic village of Owego, with many shops and some of our favorite restaurants. Hickory Park, in Owego has a great little put-in, on the Susquahanna River for kayaks or fishing boats, and we take the family there a lot.

Try the Waterman center for nature programs for children and adults!

We have had two weeks of true winter weather now. I have been sliding around on ice and even the animals with 4 feet are having fun trying to walk. Tonight we put up our Christmas tree finally! It's a very cute one, not one of the more majestic years. It looks very red and white, just perfect for our "country" house! I want you all to get a tase of the veiw that our weather affords us sometimes. I know not everyone has the snow we do! This is the view from our B&B cabin. It isn't always like this, but on the day I took this shot it just looks magical!!!!

Tonight we just did a batch of Farmgirl Handcream. It's like a sweet smelling, protective lip-balm for your hands. We make it at home, with all natural and organic ingrediants. For an affordable rate of $500.00 plus tax, up to 4 people can enjoy a yummy, organic welcome basket full of local and made on our farm items the outdoor spa-room, and a farm tour (if arrainged ahead of time) Call us today for a little country in your vacation!

Where we are located

Small Graces B&B is located in a tiny wood in the green hills of the lower fingerlakes region. Tioga County, NY. We are central to Ithaca, Binghamton, and Elmira/Corning. Syracuse is about 1&1/2 hours, and NYC is 3&1/2 to 4 hours. We are near hiking and fishing areas, with Cayuga Lake only 30 minutes away, and the state forest literally within view of the cottage. Trail map available in the cottage. We are 20 minutes from the historic village of Owego, with many shops and some of our favorite restaurants. Hickory Park, in Owego has a great little put-in, on the Susquahanna River for kayaks or fishing boats, and we take the family there a lot. Try the Waterman center for nature programs for children and adults!
